Both American Airlines and US Airways are offering 20% bonus for converting Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) Starpoints to either AAdvantage or Dividend Miles between July 1-31, 2014.
When you convert 20,000, 40,000 or 60,000 Starpoints to American Airlines miles the SPG will give you 5,000, 10,000, or 15,000 bonus miles BEFORE the AA/US 20% conversion bonus.
You can access the AA’s offer here and US offer here.
Here’s how converting Starpoints to AA or US miles work:
Convert 20,000 Starpoints to 25,000 AA or US miles (20,000 + 5,000 bonus from SPG). AA or US will then give you an additional 20% bonus bringing the total to 30,000 miles for 20,000 Starpoints.
Does it make sense to convert Starpoints to AA or US miles?
Unless you have immediate use for either AA or US miles, I would not take advantage of this conversion bonus. AA recently discontinues their Oneworld award overnight without giving any prior notice to its program members and I doubt that they would give any advance notice in the future either.
Conclusion
This is a good offer if you are using the miles right away. I took advantage of a similar offer that AA made to Marriott conversions before their partnership was ending at the time (the partnership was reactivated last year) and when those miles counted towards the Million Miler status.
